What is the NEUBIE?

The NEUBIE (short for Neuro‑Bio‑Electric Stimulator) is a state-of-the-art, FDA‑approved direct current (DC) stimulation device, designed to tap into the nervous system and drive neuromuscular re-education.

What is the Difference Between NEUBIE and Other Electrical Therapies?

Unlike conventional TENS and other electrical therapy machines which use alternating current (AC), the NEUBIE works with direct current (DC) to precisely interface with nerve pathways and muscle activation patterns. The result is enhanced motor control, accelerated recovery, and pain reduction. Other machines on the other hand, simply stimulate the sensory nerve pathway to help with pain sensation.

How Does It Work?

Our implementation blends manual therapy, exercise rehabilitation, and NEUBIE stimulation. Because the NEUBIE’s DC waveform is designed for safe high-frequency use without skin damage, we can penetrate deeper, more selectively, and with better patient comfort than many AC devices.

Who Is It For?

  • Chronic pain patients: including back pain, neck pain, joint pain, restless neural irritability, persistent postural strain.

  • Postoperative or rehabilitation patients: after orthopedic surgery (e.g. joint replacement, tendon repairs, ACL, shoulder surgery and more) to restore function, increase muscle activation and hypertrophy and accelerate rehabilitation.

  • Athletes and sports performance: to speed recovery, reduce injury risk, optimise muscle recruitment and power output.

  • Older adults: to counter muscle loss, improve balance, maintain mobility, and slow degenerative changes (including atrophy).

  • Neurological & neuromuscular conditions: for neuromuscular reeducation in stroke, MS, spinal cord injury, Parkinson's disease, peripheral neuropathies and others.

What Can It Help With?

Some common conditions and scenarios where NEUBIE integration has shown positive results at Spectrum include:

  • Back pain, sciatica, disc-related pain.
  • Neuropathy, nerve irritation, radiculopathy.
  • Muscle strains and joint sprains.
  • Tendinopathy.
  • Shoulder impingement, rotator cuff dysfunction.
  • Post-surgical recovery and joint replacement rehab.
  • Frozen shoulder / adhesive capsulitis.
  • Movement dysfunction, muscle imbalance, postural disorders.
  • Neurological rehab (post-stroke, MS, Parkinson's Disease).
  • Athletic performance, recovery and conditioning.

Special Features

Whilst the NEUBIE is a cutting edge technology which helps stimulate muscles through exercise, there are various additional features that the machine can perform. Our favourites are the Hand Bath, Foot Bath, and the Master Reset functions. The Hand/Foot Bath mode immerses hands or feet in conductive water containers while delivering gentle currents, promoting improved circulation and deep relaxation. We find this function ideal for stress reduction and recovery. The Master Reset protocol uses specific frequencies to ‘reboot’ the nervous system, reducing protective muscle guarding, interrupting pain cycles, and restoring optimal neurological function. Together, these non-invasive functions help patients overcome chronic pain, accelerate healing, and regain mobility safely and effectively.

Is It Safe For Everyone?

While the NEUBIE is considered safe when used appropriately, there are key contraindications and precautions we observe:

Absolute Contraindications / Conditions Generally Avoided

  • Presence of an implantable cardiac device (pacemaker, defibrillator).
  • Pregnancy (especially in the first trimester).
  • Over or near active malignancy / tumor sites.
  • Active bleeding, open wounds, severe skin lesions in the targeted region.
  • Severe vascular disease or thrombosis in the area of treatment.
  • Unstable implants or hardware (unless approved by a surgeon).
  • Conditions where sensory input is severely impaired such that the patient cannot reliably report discomfort or temperature changes.
  • Epilepsy.

Other cautions include:

  • Always monitor for skin irritation, burning, or discomfort during application
  • For very fragile skin, reduction of intensity or modified electrode placement may be needed
  • Post-treatment soreness (similar to DOMS) is possible - we schedule spacing accordingly
  • Avoid intense strenuous activity on the stimulated muscle group immediately after a session
  • Patients with uncontrolled cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, or acute illness should be cleared before use

How to Get Started at Spectrum Healthcare

1. Initial Consultation & Screening: review your medical history, rule out contraindications, and assess movement baseline.
2. NEUBIE Mapping Session: we use electrical mapping to locate neuromuscular thresholds.
3. Customised Treatment Plan: combining manual therapy, movement retraining, and NEUBIE‑augmented exercises.
4. Progress Tracking: we adjust stimulation intensity, electrode placement, and movement demands dynamically.
5. Maintenance & Performance: use NEUBIE as a ‘reset’ or performance tool.
