Mackenzie Method
The McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy was developed by a New Zealand based physiotherapist, Robin McKenzie. It is an approach trusted and utilised by practitioners and patients all over the world.
As most back pain is mechanical in nature, a patient will show a pattern of response to pain and function.
The basic philosophy of McKenzie’s theory is based on the practice of extending the spine to provide significant pain relief.
Moreover, the approach focuses on physical therapy and exercise to centralize the patient’s pain into the back and away from the extremities.
Localizing the pain allows the source (of the pain) to be treated rather than the symptoms.
Central to the McKenzie method is the idea of self-healing and self-treatment for pain relief and rehabilitation.
The long-term goal is to educate patients to treat themselves and manage their own pain with a prescribed exercise program.
The emphasis is on prevention and intervention, encouraging patients to be in control of their own treatment.
